Driver Dedicated-The C & S Way

The leadership at our C&S account in Yorktown, IN has put in place a program that rewards our drivers who do not have any log violation points in RAIR fora month.  Those drivers that achieve the goal receive a coupon.

All of the drivers who have coupons put them in a hat and the one that is drawn wins a $25 gift card. It was noticed that one of the drivers was getting a coupon every month.

Doing some more digging, it was found that Thomas Mcalister (MCAT5) did not receive any log violation points so far in 2013. Even more exciting, Thomas did not receive any violation points in RAIR in 2012 either. Today when Thomas walked into the account we told him of this great achievement and how proud of him we all are Thomas said, "I am just doing my job".

That is one more reason we are proud to work with and know Thomas Mcalister.

Driver Dedicated-A Living Example at Aurora Parts

We would like to welcome Larry Buss to the elite team of DCS Certified Trainers!

Larry joined our company back in 2006. During his time on the Aurora Parts account, Larry has shown strong leadership skills. When the account needed some out of the ordinary work done, Account Manager Tim Wilhelm often depends on Larry for help. When drivers on the account needed assistance Larry was there with helpful counsel.

Larry will make a great addition to our on boarding new people onto our account.

ABS Cannot Defeat Us!

Today our Home Depot team in Monroe, OH introduced their new trailer light and ABS diagnosis system. In the past this account has faced times where the drivers have found that some of the upper trailer lights or the trailer ABS system did not work. This would make the trailer illegal to be used and would fail a DOT inspection. This would cause the client to have to unload that trailer and place the load on a different trailer or wait for a repair truck. In either case this could cause a load not delivering on time and a disappointed customer.

Now the account can check for these mechanical defects while the trailer is sitting on the customers lot and if defects are found they can make arrangements for repairs before loading.

Doing this will help cut down on service failures do to mechanical issues and cut down in DOT violations. Great effort to save us problems both in compliance and service.

Thank you for going the extra mile guys.

Cort Duggins came out and instructed OM Brian Tabor and TGM Scott Gray on how to use this diagnosis system. During this time we are very happy to find more trailers that did not require repairs than we found that did. This showed that the accounts action have been going in the correct direction. This system will help fine tune our efforts

Sums Up Turkey Dinner Perfectly

I know this is from "The Christmas Story", but it fits perfectly for Thanksgiving.  Enjoy this day with your families.  Having everyone together is a blessing that should never be taken for granted.  If you are working today or could not travel home, know we are thankful for everything you do to make all of us successful.

Enjoy the video and be sure and Thank the people you love today.

Thanksgiving-The Lincoln Way

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.

And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.  Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

Toyota Aims' to become an Irreplaceable Partner

After capturing the crown as the world's largest automobile maker from the US' General Motors, Toyota is not just satisfied with sales or profit figures. The new challenge for Toyota, says Mitsuhisa Kato, executive vice president in charge of technology development, is to be an "irreplaceable partner" for its customers.

In other words, the champion of the mass market now wants to make cars that people will passionately want to own and drive. Fitting with the firm's slogan "Toyota Reborn", some of its latest products including the 86, Crown, Avalon and Rav4 are among the "cars that we dared to reborn".

"What do you think of these cars? I think it's great there are 'pros' and 'cons'. We don't want a car that people neither love nor hate. We want to make cars that people fall madly in love with.
"That's the direction our vehicle development is taking," he said.

Design chief Tokuo Fukuichi said Toyota has been like "a department store", which has a full line-up of automobiles, and now it wants to become a "select shop".

"We're not exactly sure what a 'select shop' is, but we're going to guess the intention is to go from something like Target or Sears to Macy's or Nordstrom," Fukuichi told a global media session at the firm's Kaikan Museum in Nagoya.

The design boss outlined the three design goals of Toyota - strengthen overall design identity, refine each brand's front-end identity and tailor it to specific markets, and hone each brand's design philosophy.

"Before, we made cars so as not to be disliked by anyone. Instead of making all 100 people say it's okay, in the future we want 10 of them to say 'Wow, this is what I want. This is what I want to drive'," said Fukuichi, who was reportedly handpicked by president Akio Toyoda to take over the company's design group

Just that I know of, he has assisted me at JMC and PSP and seems like he would go above and beyond whenever needed." Jason is a very helpful driver and I am glad to have him on my fleet. He is a pleasure to work with at The Home Depot account.

Family Dollar Appeals to Middle Class

The financial crisis and the economy's slow-paced recovery have been a huge boost for business at dollar stores. These discount retailers' share prices have soared throughout this period, and some shareholders have benefited from increasing dividends as well. The low prices these retailers offer have attracted consumers struggling with depressed home values, a restricted credit market, and a tough job sector.
As the middle-class consumer continues to be affected by some of these issues, retailers like Dollar Tree Stores and Family Dollar Stores continue to report healthy profits.
The growth in share value for these companies has been impressive. Dollar Tree traded at slightly less than $10 per share at the start of 2008. After two stock splits in 2010 and 2012 aimed at keeping share prices low, Dollar Tree shares have risen to $59 per share and are valued at 18 times 2015 earnings.

In comparison, Family Dollar Store shares traded at around $19 per share in 2008 and currently trade at $70 per share; the stock's price-to-earnings ratio is 16 times 2015 earnings. Family Dollar's dividends have also risen steadily during this period.
Continued, albeit cautious, growth expectedDollar Tree's latest second-quarter results for the period ended Aug. 3 showed an increase in diluted earnings per share of 9.8% to $0.56. The operating margin increased 10 basis points during the quarter to 10.9%. The company opened 81 stores during the period and expanded or relocated 32 stores. Retail sales space grew by 7% versus a year ago to 42 million square feet.
Predictions for the third quarter estimate that sales will range between $1.87 billion to $1.92 billion, assuming a single-digit increase in same-store sales. Diluted EPS is expected to be between $0.54 and $0.59 per share.
Family Dollar Stores' fourth quarter ended on Aug. 31, and the retailer delivered adjusted diluted EPS of $0.86, up 14.7%. Comparable-store sales were flat during the period. For the fiscal year, the company reported an increase of 4.4% in adjusted and diluted EPS to $3.80 and higher comparable-store sales by 3%.
The company expects growth over the near term -- 500 new stores opened in fiscal 2013 and plans are in place to open 525 stores in fiscal 2014. It has adopted a cautious stance going into the new fiscal year as it works to increase market share, improve inventory turnover, and provide greater value to its customers.

Central Region Promotion Announcement

Please join us in congratulating Jecorey Newman on his promotion to General Manager of Transportation for the Kentucky DCS Toyota sites. In this new role, both the Hebron, KY Milk Run fleet, Owensboro, KY Frame fleet, and corresponding management teams will report to him.

Jecorey joined the J.B. Hunt team in August of 2011 as a DMIT at the Toyota Account in Louisville, KY after a six year career with UPS as a supervisor. After 3 months of exceptional performance, he was promoted to Operations Supervisor and given the Toyota - Hebron, KY Milk Run fleet responsibilities. It was not very long before Toyota began to take notice and sing his praises. In October 2012, Jecorey was trusted with the Account Manager role for the Toyota – Hebron, KY business. In this position, he managed the 7 driver Milk Run DCS fleet and acted as the Customer Liaison between Toyota and the JBI/JBT divisions monitoring 11 lanes yielding over 1,000 loads monthly.

Since taking over as Account Manager, Jecorey has extended the fleet Injury Free streak to 1,837 days and the Collision Free streaks to 1,371 days. He has also improved driver utilization, load density, buffer yard deployment saving Toyota more than $50,000 annually while boosting JBH revenues; and has helped to to support driver pay increases. Furthermore, he helped to bridge the gap as the local subject matter expert when Toyota transitioned local and corporate management teams. Through his constant willingness to aid Toyota with continuous improvement projects, Jecorey has won the respect of both the local and corporate Toyota teams and has taken the overall client/carrier relationship to new heights.

In 2012, the Toyota Group Accounts received the Central Region 2011 Platinum Award. Jecorey and his impacts to the Hebron business were integral pieces of the puzzle allowing for this honor. In June 2012, Jecorey was honored by Toyota as one of the chief architects of a champion Kaizen project centered around improving the Milk Run load fleet density. In 2013, Jecorey helped aid the Toyota Group Accounts in receiving the Central Region 2012 CVD Award. The Hebron account alone was honored with “4 Years Injury Free”, “1 Million Miles Preventable Collision Free”, and “2 Years Preventable Collision Free” awards.

Jecorey is a Hopkinsville, KY native and moved to Louisville, KY in 2005 to attend the U of L graduating in 2010 with a degree in Business Management and he is very much looking forward to moving back to Louisville. Jecorey has also completed Toyota Kaizen carrier training, the JB Hunt Leaders program through 201, and looks forward to the challenge of Leaders 301 in 2014.

Time and time again, Jecorey has proven himself worthy of this promotion and will no doubt persist to strengthen the relationship with Toyota and lead the Toyota Group Accounts to future achievements.

Let's all congratulate Jecorey on his promotion and wish him continued success.

Truck Fatalities Research

The number of highway deaths rose in 2012 from 2011 by 1,082, according to preliminary data released this week by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The numbers come from the 2012 Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which says that 33,561 highway fatalities occurred in 2012.
The number of large truck occupant fatalities also rose, seeing an increase for three consecutive years. NHTSA says the number of large truck occupant fatalities increased 8.9 percent in 2012 to 697. In 2011, the number of large truck occupant deaths rose 20 percent from 2010.
The increase in total highway fatalities was the first year-to-year rise since 2005. However, highway deaths in the last half-decade are at “historic lows,” NHTSA says.

As reported in last year, fatalities in 2011 were at their lowest level since 1949. Even with the increase last year, the number of deaths was at its lowest point since 1950 in 2012.
Americans in 2012 drove about the same number of miles as they did in 2011.
The number of fatalities from crashes deemed to be caused by distracted driving fell slightly to 3,328, from 3,360.
The American Trucking Associations said the report, however, “paints an incomplete and misleading picture of the nation’s trucking industry,” as the catch-all term of large-truck occupant makes the public think of freight-hauling tractor-trailers, as opposed to the smaller, non-freight-hauling vehicles that have higher crash rates than larger trucks.

“The federal government should not be so casual with its terminology,” said American Trucking Associations President and CEO Bill Graves,” and should provide further information and clarity to the public.”

The research arm of the ATA, the American Transportation Research Institute, has found that medium-duty trucks generally perform worse in terms of safety than heavy-duty trucks. Also, ATA says, interstate motor carriers are generally more safe than their intrastate counterparts.

Marco's Continues to Grow

Marco’s Pizza is celebrating 35 years in business by being recognized as the fastest growing pizza chain in the U.S., based on the number of stores opened since 2007.
“We’ve established ourselves as a leading franchise in the pizza business. It has resulted in exponential growth for our brand,” said Jack Butorac, CEO of Marco’s Pizza.
Marco’s Franchising LLC has experienced a 37 percent increase in revenue growth in 2012 and is on track to have 104 new locations for 2013. With more than 1,500 new franchisees signed, the Toledo-based pizza chain expects to double its size and quadruple its store count in the next five to seven years.
Dan O’Malley, vice president of tactical planning at Marco’s
Dan O’Malley, vice president of tactical planning at Marco’s
Marco’s has 420 stores in 32 states, the Bahamas and Panama, and expects to top 500 stores by the end of 2014 by opening two to three stores per week. Marco’s Pizza recently ranked 11th in the “2012 Pizza Industry Top 100 Movers and Shakers” as compiled by PizzaMarketPlace.com.
Founded in 1978 by Italian-born Pasquale “Pat” Giammarco, the company has grown from its roots as a beloved Ohio brand to become nationally and internationally known. Giammarco still owns and operates the Marco’s stores in the Toledo area while serving as a mentor to the current management team led by Butorac, who bought the franchise in 2004.
Marco’s credits its fresh dough made daily in every store, fresh cheese that is never frozen and a secret pizza sauce recipe created by its Italian founder for its continued growth. Strong leadership and innovative marketing and operational strategies have driven the pizza franchise’s success in the marketplace, Butorac said.
The challenge of Marco’s growth is maintaining the consistency of its products, so customers get the same pizza in Atlanta or elsewhere that they would in Toledo, according to Dan O’Malley, vice president of tactical planning at Marco’s.
O’Malley said he always wanted to own his own business. After graduating from Bowling Green State University in 1994, he went to work for a Marco’s franchise owner in Sandusky.
O’Malley grew up in the Marco’s pizza business; he worked in almost every position, including delivery driver, pizza maker, dishwasher, oven cleaner and janitor, before moving into marketing and management.
“I wanted to learn the business so I worked every position with the intent to open my own store, which I did in Mentor-on-the-Lake outside Cleveland,” O’Malley said.
“I became interested in making more of a contribution so I started working for the corporate office as a franchise rep for the Cleveland area in late 2004. Since I knew Jack (Butorac) as a franchisee, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for me,” he said.
As director of franchise operations since 2011, O’Malley has been responsible for providing direction to the franchises’ representatives and area representative coordinators so that Marco’s franchise owners are best positioned to succeed.
O’Malley still operates the franchise in Mentor-on-the-Lake where he lives with his family. He said because he works a lot in the field, he could live almost anywhere so he works out of his office at home or at Marco’s headquarters in Toledo when he’s not traveling.
“The key is having the right people to operate the stores since Marco’s has the best product and franchise system. We look for people who can use those tools. Franchisees appreciate that I’m also a franchise owner and am protecting their interests,” O’Malley said.
He said the company sees substantial growth in the southeastern and central regions of the country for expansion in the next few years, including Georgia, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina. Marco’s has 25 stores in the Atlanta area, and has opened stores in Colorado, Minnesota, South Dakota and New Jersey.
The chain recently opened stores in the San Francisco area and is looking to develop the Los Angeles area and other locations in California. O’Malley said some international interests have approached them about opening Marco’s franchises outside the U.S.
“We always want to talk to interested parties, whether they want to open one store or 100 stores,” he said.

News at Home Depot

According to recent news U.S. mortgage rates dropped for a second week, keeping borrowing costs at a four-month low of 4.1% from 4.13%. The Federal Reserve said that it will continue to buy back $85 billion in monthly bond buybacks. Consumer confidence declined at the start of October as a result of the debt ceiling negotiations in Washington which also resulted in hikes in mortgage rates. Home Depot, one of the largest retailers of home improvement and construction products and services were also affected by the events above.
Home Depot has a direct relationship with the housing sector because of the nature of the products and services it provides. The improvement in the housing industry is a good sign for investors to consider this company as an opportunity for investment.
There are a few positive signs that indicate that the housing sector will improve in the coming future

Limited brands

Limited Brands had a strong October, reporting sales gains that were more than triple what analysts had expected.
The Columbus-based retailer, known temporarily as L Brands, said yesterday that comparable-store sales rose 8 percent from the year before. Wall Street analysts had predicted that comparable-store sales, a key indicator of a retailer’s health, would rise 2.5 percent.
Sales totaled $680.5 million, up from $611 million for the same month last year.
The retailer “hit a home run, in our estimation,” said Ken Perkins, president of Retail Metrics. Making the company’s report even more impressive was that it came in a challenging retailing environment, he said.
Limited Brands’ lingerie brand, Victoria’s Secret, reported a 10 percent rise in comparable-store sales, crushing analyst expectations of a 2.4 percent rise. The sales increase was fueled by strong sales in lingerie, beauty products and in the chain’s youth-focused brand, Pink.
Bath & Body Works reported a 4 percent rise, topping expectations of a 1.9 percent bump. The sales boom was “driven by the performance of our restaged signature collection, home fragrance and soap and sanitizer business,” said Amie Preston, chief investor relations officer

WOW-Customer Service the DCS Central Region Way

While I was on vacation Scott Tully was visiting JMC – Richmond. Store # 360, Indianapolis, called in desperate need of product. Scott has always been a team player and willing to help our franchisees in any way possible. Scott without hesitation volunteered to delivered product to the store. He saved the manager at 360 a lot of time and money because the manager did not have to drive to Richmond for a will call order. He also was able to better service CiCis’ customers. Scott has done this on more than one occasion while he has been our operations manager. I feel grateful to have people at J. B. Hunt who have a spirit of teamwork and willingness to go above the call of duty. Thanks Scott for your quality service to JMC and our franchisee community. You don’t know how much this helps everyone out.

Blitz---Morehead Style

Last week was forecasted to be our busiest week of the year in terms of freight volume. In an effort to slow our drivers down, we had a TEAM inspection blitz all week. This meant that every driver who came in to pickup a load had a TEAM inspection completed with them. This gave us the opportunity to talk safety and spend a little time in their world. Although we didn't reach our goal of spending time with every driver on the fleet, we did manage to impact 26 of the 30 active drivers running last week.

That is a fantastic approach to being proactive for our Family Dollar team.

Halloween 2013-Josh Kimble's Family

Here it is. Indy is always a day behind.  Duncan is 4 years old and Shane is 7 months.

Early Bird Gets the Load Strapped

There was a TV commercial back in the day for the Army that said, "We do more before 5 AM them most people do all day". The same can be said for the Northwest Hardwoods account.

The Northwest Hardwoods account in Elkhart, IN is managed by Tim Wilhelm. Tim made a visit to the account this week to complete drop and hook training along with 4th quarter safety training.

At 04:00 Tim walked up on this drivers getting their equipment and loads ready to start the day. Once the pre-trip inspection was done Tim helped with the load securement.

Tim got out there and got his hands dirty, which had a big impact on his drivers. His guys all laugh and enjoyed seeing Tim's face turn red from the cold. It was 30 degrees outside when he was out helping his guys.

Tim handed out new safety vest and gloves to everyone, and all enjoyed coming to work this day.

Thank you Tim for going the extra mile for your team!

Safety First at Quaker Oats

When you walk into the office at our Quaker Oats account it is easy to see that our OS Leigha Rutan is not just putting safety first, she is making personal.

Leigha has put up a dry erase board and started to post safety slogans of her own. To make this more impressive the dry erase is about 7 feet up the wall and Leigha is 5 foot 3 inches tall. It takes an effort to update the safety messages to the drivers.

Thank you to both Josh Kimble and Leigha Rutan for going the extra effort into getting safety out to your team.
